Democracy

       Democracy according to one time President of United States of America, Abraham Lincoln, is defined as government of the people, by the people and for the people.

       Democracy is a system of government in which the election the electorates periodically vote to elect their representatives.

The two types of democracy are Direct democracy and indirect democracy.

       FEATURES OFDEMOCRACY

1. Government of the people, by the people and for the people

2. It is based on free and fair elections

3. Freedom of speech

4. It promotes equality before the law

5. Democracy tolerates the existence of opposition

        MERITS OF DEMOCRACY

1. It promotes accountability of the leaders

2. It promotes freedom of expression

3. It promotes political stability in a country

4. It guarantees the supremacy of the constitution

      DEMERITS OF DEMOCRACY

1. Democracy encourages lobbying among the elected representatives, thereby promoting corruption

2. Majority opinion is usually forced on the people while minority opinion is sometimes overlooked and ignored.
